I had a strange dream last night (I am very unaccustomed to dreaming by the way - this is a new 'treat' of pregnancy that I am sure I could do without, although I am not complaining because at least I sleep fine) - anyway, I was at some sort of medical facility in some foreign and very warm place (Costa Rica maybe?) - they were examining my large belly and said "I guess you know already that the baby is a BOY" - no, I didn't know ... and then I woke up distressed with the decision to tell Joe or pretend to be surprised at
his birth. Huumm ... not sure if this means my body is communicating the baby's gender to me while I'm sleeping ... or if it just reflects my growing anxiety about not having chosen a definite boy name. Here are the front runners (in no order), feel free to weigh in:
- Isaiah Anthony
- Cedric Joseph (Joe's favorite - at least the Cedric part)
- Quinn (middle name undetermined)
- I like Everest (per Tia's suggestion) and Gabriel but Joey said no.

Funny. Last night I dreamed you were using a highlighter that would tell you what sex your baby was. You had to go through and highlight a piece of paper 5 times. It highlighted blue for boy. Laura Matsen.
What's with all of the names that don't have nicknames??? Because of that, I have to give them all a thumbs down from my end (which I know is the sole determining factor in naming your baby) :) If you name him the "I" name, I'd NEVER be able to spell it, and if you named him Cedric I'd forever call him "Mr. Harry Pottuh"...haha. It's interesting to me that you are leaning towards names that are traditionally african american.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for a girl, since you have a fab girl name! I, however, voted boy. You're looking great!
hhmmm ... I have to disagree a bit: Isaiah is straight from the Bible, and Cedric is Celtic (a la Harry Potter; as for 'the entertainer' - not sure what his excuse is) - Quinn is Irish. not sure what your sources are but they are wrong! :)
but I do agree, not great nicknames ... except "Q" for Quinn :)
I like Quinn, but I thought that you were avoiding names that ended with "n" because of Nelson (i.e. no Kiernan Nelson).
Thanks for sharing the belly photo. In a few weeks, we'll be seeing baby photos instead!
yes true, but the "n" sound in Quinn is a little different than in most - not sure why but seems easier to say - some phonetic rule I am sure.
I was just basing it on my work with inner city youth around here. We had one Cedric's and two Isaiah's that were all african american. "The entertainer" is AA too, as is Isaiah Washington from Grey's Anatomy. Interesting to know that the actual background of those names is very different!
I think Quinn is cute, so I vote with Anne. Quinn Joseph has a nice ring to it.
Clearly Bryan and I have similar histories. I told him your names, and he said "hmm, those are names for african american kids." Krista (the roomie) puts in her vote for Isaiah and argued with Bryan that it is biblical (and no, I didn't set up any of this!).
Thumbs up all around for the girl name :) Can't wait to meet him/her
How about Brady Quinn Nelson? Not only would there be a connection to Ireland/Scotland - but there is also a connection to Notre Dame! Wow! :) Or you could do Brady Joseph Nelson (nickname: BJ!) or my fav, Brady Patrick Nelson.
Patrick
Joe vetoes all cute boy names - no Brady! (but thanks for the idea)
Hi Maria,
Tia's co-worker Kristen here. Sorry to jump in but I'm also pregnant and I love reading your blog from time to time. We are the opposite- set on a boy's name but not a girl's name. I like Quinn and Isaiah. I also like Asher- it's another biblical name. Best of luck in deciding!
It won't be long and you will be holding your beautiful baby. You look great. It will be intresting to see if your dream is right. I like the name Cedric Joseph. Bob still likes Bob, but he pickes Cedric too. Good luck with the names. You and Joe were so lucky to have parents who picked wonderful names!
